Return to Ivory
So it's clearly been awhile since I've written anything. Most of the past year was spent on play testing L5R, including the new rules and approaches to the game. Now that the ivory print and play is out, it is time to see the fruition of the work done and how the players accept it.
I'll be writing a few pre and post environment analysis on the clans that I have spent a lot of time playing during the past year in the PT. Hopefully this will give an insight on the way that things have been developing and you can see where some of the cards and mechanics are being approached from.

Kotei Qualifier Tournaments (KQT)
Welcome to the Kotei season!
Team Gazeebo is proud to bring the 2010 Kotei to Manila!
During the months of February, March, April and May we will be holding qualifier tournaments. Winners of these qualifiers will win a free seat to the 2010 Kotei which is going to be held on June 12 & 13, 2010 at the elite Makati Sports Club.
How do these tournaments work?
The tournaments will be similar to the regular weekly tournaments that we run, except that the winner wins a free seat to the 2010 Manila Kotei. Of course there will be certain guidelines that we will be following for the tournament to be a qualifier for the 2010 Manila Kotei.
What are the requirements for the KQT?
Each tournament must have at least 16 players and will follow the new floor rules as stated by the L5R tournament guidelines. Of course, the more players in the tournament, the better the prizes and competition will be. For example, based on a 16 player tournament, having the entrance fee at 150.00, the winner would win the free seat to the Kotei while the 2nd place to 16th place will draft the booster packs.
What happens if I win a KQT?
If you defeat the other players in the field of battle, your entrance fee to the 2010 Manila Kotei will be waived, saving you money in the process.
What happens if I win and I am not able to attend the 2010 Manila Kotei?
The free seat to the Kotei is unfortunately, non-transferrable. You earned that slot, not them.
What happens if I already have a seat courtesy of the KQT and I win another KQT?
The seed will pass onto the 2nd place finisher. This is the only way a seed can be passed onto another player. If both the winner and the 2nd place already have their seed, it will continue to pass down the rankings until we give the seed to an individual who has not yet won a free seed.
How many seeds will you give away?
Well, the name of the game is Legend of the Five Rings. To correspond with the 5 elements involved in the game, we will give away 5 seeds in the metro during the months leading to the 2010 Manila Kotei. Each month will feature 1 KQT. There will also be a last chance qualifier tournament to be held on June, the week before the 2010 Manila Kotei.
Which stores will hold a KQT?
We will be picking different stores each month where we will hold the KQT. This is a great opportunity to meet new players, and fight on new battlefields. If you cannot attend the scheduled KQT for the month, don’t worry. Like previously mentioned, there will be a total of 5 KQTs to be held.
I live outside Manila, will my region have a KQT?
Please ask your local store/organizer to contact Team Gazeebo so that we can coordinate a KQT for your region.
Where can I see the updates on when and where the KQTs will be held?
Look for the KQT announcements over at the official L5R Philippine Forums (http://l5r.skillze.com) and at the Edge of Rokugan (http://l5rph.blogspot.com).
Winner gets a free seat to the 2010 Manila Kotei.
2nd place to last place drafts booster packs.

Harbinger MRPs
Original post here
In The Harbinger, in the Phoenix Starter, Agasha Ueda and Shiba Morihiko will be MRP'ed to cost 5 gold. What this will do is reduce the number of people Phoenix can buy (in clan) off of their Border Keep from 12 to 6, leaving only 1F guys at 4 gold or less. This also eliminates the turn 1 two Cavalry Personality draw, which is crucial.
When you look at 4 gold Personalities across the board, you generally get a 2/2 with a keyword or two, such as Samurai * Kensai with Bayushi Eisaku. With Shiba Morihiko you got two keywords, but also a Ranged Attack battle ability. In the case of Agasha Ueda, you got too much for 4 gold, simply put.
Also in The Harbinger, there are three more MRPs. Ring of Air, Water, and Void no longer require the action to be successful in their entering play traits.
As with all MRPs, these MRPs become effective immediately upon release.

Errata to Scouting Ahead (DaK) effective on CE release
It's come to our attention that somehow, during production, the card Scouting Ahead in the Death at Koten set received a wording that allows unlimited unopposed movement of units containing Scouts. Because each Scout receives this ability on assigning, the Attacker can choose to resolve an undefended battlefield first and move all his units with Scouts there one by one. This was not the intent of the ability. It was supposed to only enable movement to and from the current battlefield.
To fix this problem before it causes major balance issues in the environment, Scouting Ahead's ability is getting the following errata, which will take effect on the official release date of Celestial Edition (currently June 22 2009).
Recon
Limited: Target your unbowed Scout: Target a province. After engaging in a battle at its battlefield, give all Scouts in your units that assigned there the ability, "Battle: Move this unit to, or home from, the current battlefield" until that battle ends.
This wording restores the intent of the card, giving the movement ability only to Scouts whose units assigned to the battlefield for the duration of the battle.
